Or maybe can someone tell me why this anime is named D. gray man

From what I know the "D." doesn't really stand for anything.
And for why it's called D.Gray Man...It's like the age old question of "Why is Bleach called 'Bleach'?" ^^ From what I know there hasn't really been any answer to "Why is D.Gray Man titled that?" =/ then again I could be wrong >.>

Hmm. I find the answer from DGM omake in volume 3.
Q. What does the title, D. Gray-Man, mean?
Hoshino: It’s a word that I made up and has various meanings. It could apply to Allen and the other characters as well…On a separate note, I was thinking “Dolls” for the title before I came up with “D. Gray-Man”. Other titles I came up with before that were “Chronoa” and “Zone”.
Some believe Hoshino took it from Dorian Grey Man. It sounds alike, but have no connection with the story though.
I believe that D.Gray Man may be associated with Allen walker, since his hair most probably look gray in under different light.

D. might be stand for 'the'. D. look more cool that The Gray Man.

It's said so in wikipedia but no one can prove so. So far the character Dorian Gray and D.Gray-man don't have some any similarities yet.

Hoshino said she based the Earl on Dorian Grey from the League of Extraordinary Men. I think she pick Dorian's power to be Earl's power. That is to live long over the century. Dorian Grey would never die, until his old picture been destroyed. I think the Earl's weakness is the same as Dorian's.

I do recall reading somewhere about the Dorian Gray meaning....
Because Dorian Gray was a piece of gothic literature written about 10 years before the 19th century? So maybe it's supposed to attribute to the setting and the general theme of the story, not referring specifically to any of the characters.

This is a totally uninformed shot in the dark but maybe it has something to do with the Noahs and the Earl?Like..to balance out the whole plotline,good guy vs bad guy thing,as in trying to say that there's really no good or bad side here kinda ? x___x;;;

I'm thinking the title represents each side, sort of what like ReonenMiruel said.
Gray-Man kind of representing the Noah's, since they are....gray humans. xD
The D still puzzles me though. Probably something totally unrelated to anything or maybe the exorcists. xP

The D stands for "dolls".

Hoshino-san said it somewhere in the manga (I don't remember where).

I also remember reading somewhere that she got the idea for "gray" because it's a mixture of black and white, which can mean good and evil. Man meant humanity so... from what I remember it was something like humans are dolls of both good and evil... or something like that xD lol

I think this is the first time anime fan pondering about the real meaning of an anime title. Most of the titles are straight foward, well, except for xxxholic. Hoshino did say that she didn't think much of the title. She thought it sound good (so do me), and stuck it the to the anime. Before DGM, she did another story like it, but the main character was a girl. Hoshino said she took DGM storyline from it, and change the main character as male, and the bad man (the Earl) stay. At that time, the title was different.
We as a fan, think to much details regarding the anime we loved. Something started so simple, in the end make us thinking hard for it. Well, I do agree with what others had said. DGM title is more suited for the fight between good and bad. In reality, there's no so place where only good people live.
DGM just remind us, human like gray colour. No one is too white (too innocence) or too black (evil). Human are mostly gray. We do mistakes and good deed. Even the most nice people, did something wrong, even if it just small like a bacteria, right? I think DGM stand for that. Just like Allen, he might look nice, but he cheat in poker and even said bad things about his shishou and Kanda.

So do other characters either from the good side or the bad side, right?

((if no one has already said this)) The only thing in the anime that connects with the title is when Allen uses that attack called "Gray Man" with all those crosses over the Akumu in the Cemetary. Also, "D" Might stand for Dark?
Just a guess heehee

I know the meaning to the titles Bleach and D.Gray-man! Hee!! (I LOVE D.Gray-man & Bleach!! hee) Tite Kubo named Bleach because (I think, I'm typing from memory) as I recall, he wanted a name to symbolize the color black (becuase of the shinigami/soul reapers), but all the names for black he thought was too over-used, or something like that so he chose a name that meant the exact opposite of black, and thus "Bleach" was born. (I don't know if I got that exactly right, I'm only remembering what I read somewhere a while ago but its true, something like it.) And D.Gray-man, The D is for dolls, and gray is as we know a mixture of white and black, which symbolizes good and evil, and man is for human. So it basically means how there is good and evil in every human, humans don't have too much evil in them and not too much good, its a mixture of both, hens the color gray, so its like humans are dolls of good and evil.

i think Katsura Hoshino (the creator) meant to create a title that may include more than just one meaning or explanation .........meaning, the title may means Dorian Gray From the famous novel and the movie League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or it could mean D for dolls, gray for black and white, and man for humanity....or may include, mean or stand something else totally different. But the explanation am buying is the one with dolls and Black&whit -good and evil- cuz it serves both the story and the characters well. Although i would like to remind you that in the first episodes of anime there was something about a doll... i don't really remember.
Same thing for BLEACH.......some say it's because Ichigo's hair, others say cuz Kubo Tite (the Creator) is a fan of Nirvana Rock band -there's an album of nirvana called Bleach-, and there's who say that it's called bleach because shinigami bleach (cleanse) the hollows.....................but again i think the creator meant to create a multi usage name, but i believe hosino did better than kubo in creating a name servers the anime well

the 14th is the dark side . crowned clown is the white side.

well I thought until now that there is the D. because...I think in one of the last episodes of the first season (i meant first season as the first 26 episodes with the opening Innocent Sorrow), cant remember the EXACT number, in that episode as Allen gained the advanced form of his left eye, there was an D. on that skull there. I actually didn´t care much what it meant...maybe Dark or Dead or something like that....and that Gray-man was meant for Allen - gray as black and white (someone says even that he has gray hair...i thought his hair was more like...white, no matter how gray it appeared xD) and man because...well, he is male

now i know the real reason. Thanks!

Not sure what D stands for. However as someone mentioned above that there was an episode where Allen used a move with his anti-akuma weapon and it was called "Gray Man." Perhaps D. Grayman is some special technique Allen can utilize against akuma then again I'm not sure. -__-

If the name actually stands for 'Dorian Gray Man' I don't know if I'd want to hug Hoshino, since that seems like pure amazing, or if I'd want to smack her, cause she's always taking something from someplace else. I do like the idea of it, and it sounds smoother than 'Dolls Gray-man' or 'Dark Gray-man'. Dark Gray-man sounds very engrish to me, and I don't like the idea of engrish title. But, I'm assuming its meaning hasn't been found yet, or that Hoshino will go all Naruto on us, and it'll mean absolutely nothing.

Bleach was gonna be "Black" then "White" but Bleach seemed best for the maker. Oh and the name comes from the clothing of the characters. Shinigamis have black clothes and arrancar have white.
